Anti-Bullying Campaign

Please note that the following is Rachel Crichlow's concept of the ad, prior to discussion with her group members. Therefore any of it is subject to change within the next 24 hours.

Concept: A television advertisement for an Anti-Bullying Campaign inspired by the recent tragic occurrence in Barbados where a young life was lost as a result of bullying.

Estimated time: 3 minutes for the ad itself. However, the length of the documentary aspect at the end which will feature the father of the bullying victim is yet unknown and can only be fully determined after this interview has taken place.

Also, in the event that we are unable to feature the father in this piece, the next option is to feature actual victims of bullying (about 2 -3 depending on who is willing to share), to tell their stories briefly.

Target Audience: School community [Students, parents and teachers]

Synopsis: 3 main characters individually tell their stories but it is pieced together like a collage so that their 3 individual stories converge to create 1 story.
Visually it consists of these individuals partially hidden as they reflect, combined with images of what they are telling.

Team: Director: Cabral "Larc" Trotman.Producers: Nahshonda Hall, Rachel Crichlow, Shawn Greene. CAST: Queen's College Drama Club, others.Camera crew: Nahshonda Hall, Rachel Crichlow, Shawn Greene

"Dinner Theatre Advertisement"

Here is our first draft script

"Dinner Theatre Script"

EXT. RESTAURANT EVENING
A couple is entering a restaurant. The woman is heard complaining.

CATHERINE
I can’t believe you took me here. This restaurant isn’t on the a class listing. I hear this place is boring!

They continue walking into the restaurant.

INT. RESTAURANT EVENING
Michael’s face shows reacting to Catherine’s bickering.

MICHAEL
I’m sure we will have a good time. Now relax and enjoy the ambiance.

CATHERINE
(sarcastically) I’m sure we will have a good time. Uh hmmm! (aside) If this place had any variety.

There are two men sitting down at a table across from Michael and Catherine. The waiter is taking their order and Michael and Catherine are seen being seated in the background.

BUSINESS MAN 1
And two chicken teriyaki stakes....and three pina coladas...
Waiter looks defeated and is writing up order. He is signalled by Michael and moves swiftly away.

WAITER
Good evening. Can I take your order?

MICHAEL
What would you like Catherine?

CATHERINE
I would like to have....(looking at the menu) I would like to have a good time Michael...(looking at waiter) Do you have anything that happens here?

WAITER
No, unfortunately not ma’m, but if this was my restaurant...

There is a close up on the waiter’s face and the restaurant is transformed with a performance space.

WAITER CONT’D
(singing Opera) There would be...amazing dinner theatre... There would be acting and singing and dancing too...in this amazing dinner theatre...

Manager appears on the transformed performance area of the restaurant. The manager begins performing in a stylised manner.

MANAGER
Why are you not working so well?

WAITER
Because there is nothing to motivate me here...

MANAGER
(sarcastically) Really...

WAITER
Yes...

MANAGER
And what would you suggest?

WAITER
(waiter breaks out in song again) Amazing dinner theatre...

Graphics appear on screen about the dinner theatre concept. Afterwards the restaurant returns to the original setting. Michael is dancing and singing around the restaurant.
The waiter slips Catherine his number.

WAITER CONT’D
(cupping his hand by his ear) Call me.

Working Hypothesis and Interpretation
It is a general characteristic of the common Caribbean youth, to be well informed of a number of North American and European cultural elements; however the same cannot be said when it comes to elements of our Caribbean culture. It could be assumed that this disconnection could be attributed to the strong influence the global media has on our island. Caribbean people need to actively engage this issue by using the same media as a vehicle to express their culture both locally and internationally, to maintain the region’s vibrancy and its identity.
Topic
1. Significance of Caribbean folktales and the impact of the media on these stories and Caribbean culture as a whole.
There was once a time when children would sit eagerly listening to grand ma and grand pa,
tell stories of past times and of mythical creatures the roamed the islands of the Caribbean.
Nowadays, however children spend most of their surfing the internet or looking at television
so much so that they have become more aware of Count Dracula , Frankenstein and the werewolf than they are of our local spirits. I fear that this will result in a loss of our local culture
as more and more as our youth become Americanized. The purpose of this film is to attempt to reintroduce these creatures and their stories in an attempt to preserve or local heritage.

Rough version of script outline

This is a rough version of the script outline.

Production Management
Storyline for Dinner Theatre

1. Couple is outside of restaurant talking. The woman is quarrelling with the man over his choice of restaurant.
2. The couple is in the restaurant and sits down at the table farthest to the left.
3. There are two other couples that we can see on screen.
4. A waiter is at the couple of men. One of the men is arguing with the waiter.
5. Another couple (romantic) wonders why the waiter is taking so long to reach them.
6. The waiter is called by the first couple and on his way he is stopped by the romantic couple.
7. They make their order and the waiter continues to the first couple’s table.
8. While there, the couple says that this restaurant is boring and asks if there is any form of entertainment. The waiter replies by saying “If this was my restaurant… ” Suddenly the restaurant transforms magically and the concept of dinner theatre is introduced. The waiter sings and performs a short scene with his manager. Then graphics appear on the screen with the "Dinner Theatre, Coming to a Restaurant Near You"..."For More Information on How to Implement Dinner Theatre Into Your Restaurant Contact De Men Productions"
9. After the grapics the scene returns back to the original setting and then the woman appears frustrated. The waiter watches in amusement as the man who came in with the woman is still caught up in the idea of dinner theatre and is dancing and singing around the restaurant. The waiter then gives her his number. While the number is being given to the woman, the audience claps for the man who is still singin and he bows and the ad is finished.

Project Proposal (Levi, Akil, Francis)

"De Men Productions"
Project Concept: Dinner Theatre

Project Description
We are introducing a new concept called "Dinner Theatre" to Barbados. This will be acheived through the delivery of an advertisement geared specifically to restaurant owners and also to restaurant goers. This concept fuses culinary and theatre arts. It is through this medium that restaurant patrons can appreciate this concept.

Audience
This project proposes a way to possibly significantly boost revenue for restaurant owners and to add value to their menu. Restaraunts can use this idea creatively to have a diverse dinner experience. Patrons get the opportunity to have dinner and to enjoy the best in local theatre.

The Budget
TBA: Awaiting partners. If we are unable to finance this project it will become and entire student body project. This is where we will use students as directors, directors of photography, grips, sound, lighting, other cast and crew. This would also help in building the students' portfolio and give them practical experience working on a project.

Team:
We will shortlisted a few possible members for our crew. We are looking at Mr.Neil Sorhaindo as director and Mr.Jake Thomas as director/director of photography. We have also had discussion with the tutors of the Directing and Production Tools courses. They have given us permission to use their students as members of our crew as a method of grading.

Research, Research, Research!!!

Today's class was very productive, I must say. Finally Rachel and I came up with an idea which already I have begun researching. I like the fact that finally we have both made a decision and we'll definately contact our other group member to bring him up to date with the new idea; which i'm sure he would like it as well. For now though, it's all about doing the reseach so we can start adding some peas in this rice (why am i referring to food....i don't know) the thing is, I actually hate rice. Oh well. So once we do this research we can then break down our findings and come up with the best possible scenario and ideas and finally translate all that chatter into script form. I 'm hoping that the script writing process goes really well, but before I jump the gun, i'm going to focus on the task at hand which is research, research, research,; that is the important part.

Late Blogger

I have had a blog block for the past few days, really I'm clueless as to what to say that would not be a mere regurgitation of what everyone else has already said. Apart from my blog block, I have an unfortunate brain block. So many ideas on the surface, but as soon as I try to dig deeper...nothing. But I'm hoping my groupies will be able to help me excavate a brilliant idea very soon, before the walls close in and I'm squished in this place of uncertainty. . .

Guidelines

Hello Class,
I hope you had a good week since I saw you last.

Some guidelines:

1. When you post, please do so through the BLOG - the url is producinginbarbados.blogspot.com. The login is your gmail login.

This will mean all your posts will be kept in one place. Anyone wanting to see what has happened in the class need only go there. It will also be useful for me when I am marking the work.

2. Last week's contract exercise: your contract should be for the film business. Layout is also important.

3. Please be prepared to talk about your Projects today, it is time to finalise the Proposals.

Best wishes
Frances-Anne

Projectwise, my group is still in the research phase for producing the script and building a contact/consultant list.

wel the truth is that this class turing out to be my best so far, this semester. may be its the atmosphere and how it contributes to how much we learn in so little time.

first week

Hi all.

Glad to have gotten through another week of classes on the whole. I really enjoyed this weeks class and am looking foward to next week. All my classmates seem affably and very easy to talk to and work with. I hope that my opinion of you guys is correct.

I hope that we can continue, or begin to work together as a class and learn to appreciate each other and each other's work.

Project Now Beginning

I thought today's class was quite productive in producing new ideas. We were all brainstorming like crazy today; just pitching ideas. I like the concept my group has come up with. We are definately going to work on it and see it through. However, you never know if the idea may be changed for something alot better. I think we have creative people on my team which in turn works well for me. Cheers!!!
Dear Producing Class,

Thanks for a great first class!  I'm looking forward very much to the rest of the course.

Here is a resume of the points we covered in class, as well as tasks to complete for the next class.

The aim of the course is to give you a practical overview of the job of the Producer. During the course you will produce a small project from Concept to Delivery, with the aim of going through all the steps necessary to Produce the film. If posible put aside the jobs of writer, director, actor and try to think as a Producer.

What is A Producer?

1. Dictionary definition: a producer is a person by whom a film is made. Literally "to produce" meaning "to make"; responsible for delivery of the film "product".

2. The producer is responsible. The buck stops with him/her. He cannot go home early, say "I have something else to do", have a family etc... The Producer gets done whatever has to be done. If no-one else is available to do something, the producer has to do it.

3. The producer is a Leader. (has a vision and achieves it)

4. The producer is a Manager. (needs people skills to manage cast, crew, writer, director etc)

5. The producer is responsible for raising and managing Finance on the production.

6. The producer is responsible for bringing the film in "on time, and on budget"

7. The producer is responsible for ensuring that every aspect of production is implemented and runs smoothly.

8. The producer is responsible for delivering the Project to the highest production value posible, within the available budget.

This requires creative thinking and problem solving, thinking outside the box.

The following are the areas of responsibility of the Producer. The course will be evaluated as follows on these areas:

1. The Proposal (Business Plan) (15%) - The producer has responsibility to visualise the final product at the projects inception. What is the product, what is its market, who is its target audience. Is the product viable. What is the financing scenario (where will the funding come from).

The Proposal comprises:
Project description,(including Concept, Treatment, and Script if available) Target Audience, Marketing plan, Budget, and Financing Scenario. Key Creative elements - style, cast, Key Crew (ie cinematographer), music. (This can all be brief but it needs to be laid out)

2. Legal, Contracts Releases and Forms (15%) Contracts provide the legal framework on which every aspect of the production is based. Ownership of the project, compensation of all parties, and music copyright are some of the elements covered by contracts.

3. Script Breakdown and Scheduling Software (15%). A key stage of prep, the Script Breakdown breaks every scene into all its different elements - eg Cast, Day/night, location, props, costumes, special effects, time needed to shoot etc.

The Schedule lays out the most efficient timeline for achieving the shoot, based on location, cast availability etc etc.

This script breakdown is necessary to produce ...

3. The Budget, and Cashflow: (15%) The Budget costs each and every item in the Breakdown, and all other elements needed to deliver the project.

The production Cashflow lays out how much money will be needed when during the production.

During the Shoot, time is money, so effective planning (as above) is essential.

The aim is to follow the Schedule precisely in order to bring the show in "on time and on budget" according to the Cashflow. (not go over budget).

During the shoot weekly and daily production and cashflow reports are produced (and sent to funders/producers/banks etc) in order to monitor and keep production on track.

5. Post-production (15%) Everything that has to happen to deliver the final product to the highest level, including editing, music composition, sound mix, grading, Master outputs etc.

* Journaling (15%). You are required to do a report of production progress at least 1ce a week. This will give an opportunity to think through challenges and get feedback from other class members.

* Attendance (10%). If you are late or absent from class you will lose 10% of your final mark. As a Producer it is essential to be on time if not early for all meetings. It is not acceptable to be late or absent without providing a valid reason in advance.

Things to do for next class.

1. In your groups, complete your Proposal (including script) and put it up on blog.

2. Each person to journal weekly (not 2 lines but a good exploration of where production stands to date!)

That's it folks. See you tomorrow! You can also email me directly to francesannesolomon@gmail.com.

Love,
Frances-Anne

Class Today

I thought the class today was wonderful, the setting fosters creative energy. Just have to work on all of our ideas and share our thoughts with one another honestly. :D

No more bickering among producers! lol hehehe
